I hope you are all celebrating the Oscars this evening with some sort of gathering or non-gathering. I prefer watching the Oscars with just my family. I find Oscar parties to be totally distracting and I can never really pay attention to the telecast because everyone is commenting left and right. Whether you are having a party or not, there is no reason why you cannot enjoy a unique cocktail. With an array of wonderful and diverse films, it was sure easy to think of the theme cocktails to celebrate the nominees. Why not try some of these (or all if you are brave and don't have to go into work tomorrow).
"The Artist" : The Mary Pickford- enjoy a tribute to the legendary silent movie actress.
- 2 oz light rum
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- 1 tsp grenadine
- 1 tsp maraschino cherry juice
"The Descendants" : The Mai Tai - we would do this movie an injustice if we did any differently.
- 1 oz light rum
- 1/2 oz lime juice
- 1/2 oz orange curacao
- 1/2 oz orgeat syrup
- 1 oz dark rum
- maraschino cherry for garnish
"The Help" : A Mint Julep - a Southern classic.
- leaves from 4-5 mint sprigs
- 2 sugar cubes or 1/2 oz simple syrup
- 2 1/2 oz bourbon
- mint sprig for garnish
"Midnight in Paris": The Sidecar- transport yourself to the 1920's with this classic.
- 1 1/2 oz cognac or bourbon
- 1 oz Cointreau or triple sec
- 1/2 oz lemon juice
- lemon twist for garnish
"War Horse" : A Horse's Neck- first appeared in 1876 but they drank it during WW1 too!
- spiral lemon peel
- 2 oz bourbon
- 8 oz ginger ale
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters (optional)
"Moneyball": Beer - Miller Genuine Draft Have roasted peanuts on the side.
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close": A Tom Hanks/Collins
- 1 1/2 oz gin
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- club soda
- maraschino cherry for garnish
"Tree of Life" : Rodney Strong Cabernet - a good vintage, a bold taste, biblical yet mysterious.
"Hugo": A French 75- recipe first recorded in 1930 and created in Paris.
- 1 oz gin
- 1 oz Cointreau
- Squeeze of lime
- 1 sugar cube
- Champagne, chilled
